Geriatric Cardiology Fellowship Program

The primary mission of the McGill University Geriatric Cardiology Fellowship Program is to train modern-day specialists to become highly skilled in providing integrated care for complex older adults with cardiovascular conditions, particularly those with multiple chronic conditions and geriatric syndromes such as frailty. Trainees are exposed to outpatient and inpatient milieus spanning acute and chronic care of ischemic disease, valvular disease, and heart failure. They become integral members of the “Heart Team”, representing geriatric issues for those in need of surgical or transcatheter interventions. Trainees are actively involved in geriatric cardiology research with access to observational and RCT datasets. The fellowship is accredited as a 1-year program. Shorter elective rotations are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Integrated CV Imaging Fellowship Program

With great strides made in the field of cardiovascular imaging over the past decade, the time has come to introduce new pathways of training emphasizing the multimodality approach. The McGill University Integrated Cardiovascular Imaging Fellowship Program is based at the Jewish General Hospital (Montreal, QC). This innovative program promotes an approach adapted to the comprehensive needs of our patients. Trainees are actively involved in multimodality imaging research, either retrospective or prospective. The fellowship is accredited as a 2-year program including level III certification in echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance. Additional training in cardiac computed tomography and nuclear cardiology is considered on a case-by-basis.

CoreSlicer.com Morphomics Webapp

Analytic morphomics refers to the measurement of body composition biomarkers from medical imaging, most commonly computed tomography (CT) images. An emerging body of literature supports the use of morphomic biomarkers such as muscle mass measured on single-slice CT images for risk prediction in a range of clinical populations. CoreSlicer is a free and open-source web-based software developed by Dr. Jonathan Afilalo to facilitate measurement of morphomic markers by clinicians and researchers. CoreSlicer enables extraction of morphomic markers from CT images by non-technically skilled users. Measurements have been shown to be reproducible and accurate in relation to reference software.

FrailtyTool.com Essential Frailty Toolset App

As cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, we are increasingly faced with patients presenting in their 9th and 10th decades of life for severe symptomatic heart disease. While most recognize the importance of frailty, few are equipped with tools to objectively measure it beyond the eyeball test. FrailtyTool is a free smartphone app developed by Dr. Jonathan Afilalo to facilitate measurement of frailty by clinicians and researchers at the point-of-care. In <2 minutes, the app provides structured recommendations and computes a global frailty score based on the Essential Frailty Toolset (“EFT”). The EFT was developed and validated in the FRAILTY-AVR Study encompassing >1,000 older adults from North American and Europe. The app is available for iOS and Android devices.
