MORNING AFTER PILL AKA EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION
Similar to birth control pills but at a higher dosage; contain estrogen and/or progesterone. Prevent implantation by altering endometrial metabolism and/or inducing early menstruation. Taken after unprotected intercourse (within 72 hours, and a second dose 12 hours after the first dose).

  • Effective in cases of unplanned/unprotected sex or rape
  • Good backup if the condom breaks or if the diaphragm/cervical cap dislodges
  • Can only be used for emergency situations
  • Cannot be used if you used it within 10 days
  • Requires prescription
  • Common side effects:
    • bleeding
    • breast tenderness
    • headaches
    • nausea (50% chance)
    • vomiting
  • Very rare side effects:
    • blood clots
    • heart attacks
    • high blood pressure
    • liver problems
    • strokes
  • Women who cannot use the pill should not use the morning after pill
